Welcome to Kilmore Cottage

Kilmore Oneilland Trust (KOT) was formed in 2021 by unpaid local volunteers to explore the redevelopment of the Kilmore Cottage to address evident environmental and social needs in the village and surrounding areas. The Kilmore Cottage has long been a Listed Building at Risk at the heart of the village, setting a tone of decline and dereliction. The building is of increased significance as one of the few (circa.144) surviving thatched buildings left in Northern Ireland (a reduction from 30,000 in 1950) and one of the fewer still that are located in a village setting where a viable scheme of restoration is possible. The site's prominent location at the centre of Kilmore provides us with an unique opportunity to develop an inclusive and sustainable scheme of development and restoration which can address local needs and be a catalyst for the regeneration of the core, community and character of Kilmore, making the area a better place to live work and visit.

The Community have identified a need that Kilmore Cottage will contribute to Community Life in the Kilmore Area

The History of Kilmore Cottage

Kilmore Cottage is a vernacular thatch-under-tin cottage, which mostly likely has its origins in the late 17th Century, appearing on the earliest map of Kilmore village dated 1707. It is one of the last 150 Thatched Roof cottages in Northern Ireland.

How the Project Started

Kilmore Oneilland Trust is a Grassroots Enterprise; born out of a Community Need. Conor Sandford; the Chair of this Social Enterprise realised that Kilmore Cottage could contribute to the Community Life of the Kilmore area by addressing social needs.

Aims & Objectives of the Project

The aims of the project range from contributing to the Community Life of the Kilmore area, to aid with the protection of old buildings, conserve the surrounding parkland & advance the educational skills of the public in building preservation.

"There is a large Irish diaspora in North America who could be enticed to come and experience the lives of their ancestors. Any building of that age should not be allowed to disappear. The cottage is part of the fabric of the community, a complex woven masterpiece that must be maintained to be appreciated by subsequent generations."

The Kilmore Cottage: a pre-emptive ode to NI thatch

Oh to be beneath that old thatched roof,

where countless dreamed of better,

would warm my hearth and stay my founds,

bog-oak purlins, sod ‘n lime.

Three hundred years have past me by and people came and gone:

the apples at the ‘half-dure’,

the byre down below,

the weaver at his loom, the occasional bride and groom,

to grace my fancy papered room.
